Meet Our Team

Rachel Givan

From Stray-Dog Rescuer to Confidence Coach for Canines

Hi, I’m Rachel, the founder and lead trainer at Premier Canine, where I specialize in helping dogs develop confidence, master off-leash obedience, and thrive in real-world environments.

My passion for dog training started early, inspired by my mother—a skilled trainer who competed in obedience and conformation events. Growing up on a six-acre property filled with animals, I learned firsthand how to create harmony between dogs, horses, and other pets.

Living in the countryside, I encountered many stray and unwanted dogs, which gave me the opportunity to work with a diverse range of breeds and temperaments. By 18, I had trained and rehomed dogs from Huskies and Pit Bulls to Golden Retrievers, Dobermans, and countless mixed breeds. Over time, I expanded my expertise into obedience, agility, dock diving, weight pulling, AKC competitions, and French Ring Sport—earning multiple high-in-trial placements along the way.

At Premier Canine, I focus on helping dogs in Pierce County gain confidence and composure in any situation—whether at home, in public spaces, or off-leash environments. My training approach builds a strong bond between dogs and their owners, resulting in lifelong obedience and better behavior.

If you’re looking for a trusted Pierce County dog trainer, I’d love to help you and your canine companion experience a more balanced, stress-free life together.

Sarah Mueller

Canine Enthusiast at Your Service!

Hi, I’m Sarah, the newest member of the Premier Canine team! My passion for dogs started at just five years old, and since then, I’ve been dedicated to understanding canine behavior, competing in dog sports, and expanding my training expertise.

When I’m not working with clients, you’ll find me participating in AKC Obedience, French Ring Sport, and other competitive dog events—constantly refining my skills to bring the best training methods to the dogs I work with.

I specialize in addressing challenging behavioral issues, from reactivity to crate training and house manners. My background as a veterinary assistant also allows me to identify concerns related to dog safety and nutrition, ensuring a well-rounded approach to training.

I’m particularly passionate about helping dog owners in Pierce County create a structured, balanced environment where their dogs can truly thrive. If you’ve struggled with training in the past or feel uncertain about where to begin, I’m here to guide you and your dog toward lasting success.

Michelle

A Loving Retired RN with a Lifelong Passion for Dogs

Hi, I’m Michelle! After 26 years as a registered nurse, I’m embracing my lifelong love for dogs and training. Before my nursing career, I spent a decade as a veterinary technician and began rescuing and training animals as a teenager. Helping dogs regain confidence and trust has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember.

In my teens and early twenties, I trained and competed in AKC obedience and conformation with Dobermans and Huskies. I also dedicated several years to the Doberman Rescue League in South Florida, working with troubled dogs to rebuild their trust and obedience skills.

Even while working as a nurse, I continued to rescue and train dogs, sharing this passion with my three daughters. One of my greatest joys was teaching them how to care for and rehabilitate animals that had lost faith in people.

Now retired, I’m fortunate to join my daughter Rachel at Premier Canine, reigniting our shared love for helping dogs thrive. Serving Pierce County and beyond, I assist where needed—but my favorite part is caring for and playing with our canine guests. Some of our board-and-train campers never get tired of fetch!

I feel truly blessed to be surrounded by dogs every day and to be part of a team dedicated to helping families across Pierce County build lasting bonds with their pets.

Our Past Canine Transformations

“My pup is extremely obedient and very acknowledging of commands when we’re out and about with distractions galore.”

Cannot recommend Rachel’s services enough. My pup is extremely obedient and very acknowledging of commands when we’re out and about with distractions galore. People come up to me and comment how well behaved he is (Australian Shepherd), and I just always reiterate the services Rachel provides. Best investment for anyone having trouble with training their pup.

“Again Rachel spent time “training” us on the commands that Fiona now knew.”

My husband and I added an American Bully puppy to our family last year and knew we needed to invest in some training.

Thankfully we found Rachel online and signed up for her puppy training course when Fiona was 3 months old. She came back to us with a great foundation and Rachel spent time with us going over what Fiona learned in the 10 days.

We decided to continue to invest in training and signed Fiona up for Adult camp at 6 months.

We were so impressed with what Fiona learned! Again Rachel spent time “training” us on the commands that Fiona now knew. There isn’t a day that goes by that we aren’t grateful for Rachel and her expertise!

“Her recall is better than ever and walking her on leash has become a fun experience instead of a chore like it was before. “

We have nothing but amazing things to say about Rachel and Premeir Canine.

We have a one year old reactive Australian Shepherd that we sent to her camp and she came back with a whole new set of tools to help her when she is passing dogs on leash! Her recall is better than ever and walking her on leash has become a fun experience instead of a chore like it was before.

We would highly recommend Premire Canine to anyone who wants to have a better listening and more well behaved dog in their family. We will definitely be recommending all our friends and family for training!

“He can heel and not react towards other dogs on walks now!”

My 2 year old German shepherd (Howie) developed reactivity towards dogs after we moved from suburbia to the city. He wasn’t able to go on walks or go to the bathroom without barking or lunging towards other dogs.

After a board and train with Rachel we are both so much better equipped to handle these situations. He can heel and not react towards other dogs on walks now! He has a great recall as well.

Overall it has changed our lives together. He is so much more mindful in and out of the house as well. Howie is still his goofy and sweet self just with better manners and more skills.

“We can take Robin out to the park, on a trail, around the neighborhood, etc with ease now.”

Rachel trained my dog Robin – a 2 year old German Shepherd/Great Dane mix. We had tried many types of training on our own, but really needed an expert.

Rachel took the time to talk to me on the phone and explain the process and answer my questions (I had A LOT).

Rachel is extremely trustworthy and amazing with our dog. We can take Robin out to the park, on a trail, around the neighborhood, etc with ease now. Her recall is perfect, the barking is minimal now, and our doggo is SO HAPPY. Robin built so much confidence and we learned tools how to properly communicate with her through Rachel’s expertise. I’m so grateful for Rachel and I highly recommend her training!

“My experience with Premier Canine was amazing.”

I sent my dog Hank to puppy school. He learned to sit, stay in place, and was potty trained. He was also afraid of the car so she trained him in the car. I was so pleased with my dog’s training that I sent him back for the advanced training . Rachel is amazing. Hank heels on and off leash, he can handle lots of distractions like the farmers market and still behave and have manners. He can heal walking through store. I take him to many meetings with me and he lays at my feet and stay there with no disruption. I could not be happier.

I would recommend Rachel To anyone, she’s amazing. Having gone through both trainings if my dog needs some help with anything, she will come to my house and give him a lesson and I’ve also texted and called her many times. She always answers. Didn’t know what to expect, but I couldn’t be happier with the results, I’ve had dogs, but none of them have been trained well. Her programs are worth Every penny, and I could not be happier. Thank you, Rachel. You guys are the best!!

Where We Train

At Premier Canine, we proudly provide expert dog training and board-and-train services throughout Pierce County and the Puget Sound region. Our service areas include Tacoma, Puyallup, Gig Harbor, Lakewood, Federal Way, South King County, Olympia, Bremerton, Port Orchard, Shelton, and surrounding communities.

F.A.Q.s

Do you work with dogs that have a bite history or display human aggression?

We specialize in creating harmony between clients and their dogs, but we do not work with dogs that have a history of biting or display human aggression. Our training camps are not designed to safely or effectively address these behaviors. We are happy to refer you to trainers who specialize in this area.

We may work with dogs displaying human reactivity on a case-by-case basis after a thorough evaluation.

Why do you split your board and train programs?

We offer several program options to best meet the unique needs of each client, their dog, and their training goals. This flexibility ensures we can provide the most effective and personalized training experience.

Do you work with dogs that fight in the same household?

We do not offer training for households with dogs that are actively fighting. However, we can assist with minor issues between dogs in the same home and help create a more peaceful environment.

Why should I invest in your board and train program?

Our Board and Train program offers a comprehensive, results-driven approach to dog training. By immersing your dog in a structured environment with personalized, one-on-one attention from experienced trainers, we address behavioral challenges, teach essential skills, and build a strong foundation for long-term success.

This program saves you time and ensures consistency in training, which is crucial for lasting results. Plus, we provide follow-up support to help you maintain your dog’s progress at home. It’s not just an investment in training—it’s an investment in a happier, more harmonious life with your dog.

How often will I get updates?

We provide regular updates through our social media channels (Instagram and Facebook) so you can follow your dog’s progress. Clients without social media will receive updates via text or email. If you have any concerns, feel free to reach out at any time.

Are e-collars ethical?

When used correctly, e-collars are a valuable tool for communication, not punishment. We teach dogs to understand the e-collar as an extension of the leash, enabling clear and gentle communication both on and off the leash.

E-collars allow you to guide your dog in any setting—at home, on walks, or off-leash in the field—with precision and minimal pressure. They are safe, humane, and effective when paired with proper training techniques.

What training methods do you use?

We take a balanced approach to training, combining structure, clear expectations, and positive reinforcement. While we use treats and praise to reward desired behaviors, we also incorporate corrections and pressure when necessary. Our goal is to teach dogs through all four quadrants of learning: positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, and negative punishment.

This comprehensive approach ensures fairness, clarity, and long-term success for both you and your dog.

Can I visit my dog during training?

While we understand the desire to visit your dog, doing so can disrupt their training. Dogs are here because of associations formed in their home environment, and we work to reset those associations for better outcomes. Reintroducing owners prematurely can confuse the dog and set back progress.

Rest assured, the bond between you and your dog will grow stronger after training as we help transfer their new skills and mindset back to your home.

What if I have another dog at home that isn’t trained?

No problem! Our training doesn’t just focus on your dog’s time with us—we also provide you with the tools and knowledge to create a balanced environment at home. During the program, we’ll give clear guidance on how to manage interactions between your trained and untrained dogs, ensuring consistency and harmony. If needed, we can also recommend training options for your other dog to help the whole household thrive. For households with dogs actively fighting, we recommend seeking specialized training.

I don’t want to send my dog away.

We completely understand—it can be hard to be apart from your furry friend. Our Board and Train program is designed to provide focused, professional training in a structured environment, ensuring your dog makes real progress in a short amount of time. Throughout the program, we keep you updated on their progress, and when your dog returns home, we’ll guide you on how to maintain their new skills. It’s a temporary separation for long-term benefits, leading to a happier, more balanced relationship with your dog.

What if I don’t have the equipment I need?

We provide all the necessary equipment for training, including collars, leashes, and e-collars. You’ll leave fully equipped to continue your dog’s progress at home.

What is your facility like?

Our facilities are in our homes, ensuring your dog is never left unattended. I live on 3 acres of countryside outside Seattle, WA, with large fenced fields for safe play and recall practice. There are dedicated spaces for sniffing, playing, and relaxing when your dog isn’t in training.
