Meet Our Team

Rachel Givan

From Stray-Dog Rescuer to Confidence Coach for Canines

Hi, I’m Rachel, the founder and lead trainer at Premier Canine. My lifelong passion is helping dogs master basic obedience and off-leash skills while building their confidence.

My journey with dogs started at a young age, thanks to my mother, an experienced dog trainer who competed in obedience and conformation shows. Growing up on a six-acre property filled with horses, dogs, and cats, creating harmony among all our animals was a priority.

Living in the countryside, I loved teaching my dogs basic obedience alongside my horse and in group settings. Country life also brought me into contact with many stray and unwanted dogs, giving me the opportunity to work with a variety of breeds and temperaments.

By the time I turned 18, I had trained or rehomed dogs from a wide range of breeds, including Huskies, Pit Bulls, German Shepherds, Bulldogs, Great Pyrenees, Labs, Golden Retrievers, Rottweilers, Pugs, Pomeranians, Dobermans, and countless mixed breeds. As I ventured out on my own, I expanded my training to include conformation, weight pulling, dock diving, agility, AKC obedience, and French Ring Sport.

Some of my proudest achievements include earning multiple obedience titles, with several high-in-trial placements. Building meaningful relationships with my dogs has been a deeply rewarding experience, and I’m passionate about helping others foster those same bonds with their canine companions.

At Premier Canine, I specialize in gradually and reliably increasing a dog’s confidence so that you can enjoy your companion in various locations and situations. Together, we’ll create a strong bond with your dog, resulting in better behavior and exceptional obedience for years to come.

Premier Canine did an excellent job of training and caring for my small cockapoo while she was with them for 3 weeks. Communication with them was easy and I felt very confident leaving my dog in their care. They accomplished all my goals with her and beyond. She still has her spunky personality but is well mannered and obedient now. I couldn’t be happier.

We are so incredibly grateful for everything you did for Honey. From the moment we met you, it was obvious how much you genuinely love what you do and how much you care about every dog you work with. Honey learned so much during her time with you, but one of my favorite things is watching her patiently wait for permission before going through doorways. It may seem like a small thing, but it reminds me every day of the confidence, trust, and manners you helped build in her. Seeing her grow into such a well-behaved, happy girl has been so rewarding. You didn’t just train Honey, you gave us the tools and confidence to continue working with her at home, and that has made all the difference. Thank you for treating her like she was your own and for giving her such an incredible start. We will always be thankful, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for a trainer who truly cares.

We are so thankful for Rachel at Premier K9 Dog Training! Andiamo went to training at 11 months old as a very energetic, slightly crazy Lagotto puppy. She had a short attention span, struggled with walking and heeling, and definitely needed help learning how to settle. After just two and a half weeks, she came home like a completely different dog. Friends and family immediately said, “Wow, is that the same puppy?” Andiamo can now place, sit, stay, walk beautifully, and wait at thresholds until she is given permission. She no longer cries or whines, and although she has always loved her crate, she can now relax comfortably in it without making a fuss. The biggest gift has been the freedom her training has given us. She now goes with us to restaurants, parks, art festivals, and so many other places. She still gets to be her playful, happy self outside with her toys, but her behavior inside the home is wonderful. We are able to enjoy more walks, more outings, and so much more time together because she is calm, confident, and well behaved. Rachel did an amazing job with Andiamo, and we could not be more grateful. Premier K9 truly helped bring out the very best in her!

Premier Canine was a lifesaver for my puppy and I. During my research for a dog breeder, I came across Premier Canine. After contacting them and viewing their website, knew I wanted to use them to help me train my puppy. My puppy came and because of my physical limitations, I know this camp was needed. Fast Forward: Upon return from the Premier Puppy Camp, it was like NIGHT AND DAY. My puppy came home: (just as stated on their website) * On/off leash obedience/ Commands/potty trained/Place on his rug/crate trained and so much more./Watching training happen on line * I love the owner puppy homework with videos as well as their availability for questions during and after! I highly recommend Premier Canine

It has been almost a month since Zoe graduated from the 2.5 week program with Sarah. Wow! We are so impressed with all that Zoe learned while she was there. We are able to take her for walks without her pulling us around. She used to jump up on everyone out of excitement and while she will still jump up every once in a while, there is huge improvement. Zoe knows “place” and does a great job of staying there. The biggest, most important thing Zoe learned is her recall. It is so nice to ask her to come and she actually comes! We loved watching the progress through instagram videos. We are so happy we made the decision to send Zoe to Premier Canine PNW. Rachel and Sarah are super knowledgeable, great at communicating and really great trainers. We highly recommend!

We sent our puppy to Premier Canine puppy camp, and it was the best money we’ve ever spent. Our puppy was very challenging. He was mouthy, he didn’t have great leash manners, and we found it hard to complete household tasks unless we had someone actively watching him at all times. We also struggled with counter surfing. We had a long phone conversation with Rachel during which she answered all of our questions, and we felt very comfortable sending our boy to her. We were so happy that we would be able to follow our puppy’s journey on Instagram and see all of the progress he was making (especially because we knew we would miss him so much!). Our boy spent 10 days at Premier, learning all the basics and came back to us like a new puppy. He walks so well on the leash, is able to stay on place and is not mouthy like he was. We have also noticed that he doesn’t counter surf like he did. Of course we still have to reinforce all that he learned with consistent training, but the training session Rachel provided for us was so helpful in giving us the tools we needed to succeed. We could not be more pleased and hope to send him to adult school at some point. If you are on the fence about sending your puppy, please do not hesitate. It’s the best thing we ever did for him and for us.

"5 STARS ISN'T ENOUGH!!! 🐾💫 Rachel and her team at Premier Canine PNW are dog training GENIUSES ! 🧠 My wife True and I sent our rambunctious pup Haku to training camp for almost 3 weeks, and the transformation was like night and day. 🌟 Rachel worked magic with Haku, teaching him manners, obedience, and even some seriously cool tricks. 🤩 But what really impressed us was the way she connected with Haku, understanding his unique personality and quirks. 💕 The training methods were positive, gentle, and effective. We can't recommend Rachel and Premier Canine PNW enough! 🙌 If you're looking for a trainer who truly cares about your furry friend, look no further. THANK YOU, Rachel, for an incredible experience and for helping us unlock Haku's full potential! 🐾❤️ - Bruce & True ❤️"

We are absolutely thrilled with the results from Premier Canine PNW! Our Aussie-labradoodle, Pickles, was a handful before training- a habitual “sofa surfer”, a constant jumper, and a relentless barker at anything that moved. Thanks to the incredible work of trainers Rachel & Sarah, Pickles is now a calm, well mannered dog. The change is truly remarkable. Now, Pickles: • Stays in place beautifully • Loves her crate and views it as a safe space • Walks are a delight! She heels perfectly and sits instantly when asked • Comes reliably when called, giving confidence off-leash Rachael & Sarah were not only great with Pickles, but also fantastic at training us. They equipped us with the necessary tools & knowledge to consistently reinforce Pickles new skills, ensuring her great behavior continues. We wholeheartedly recommend Premier Canine PNW to any dog owner looking for serious, lasting results. This investment has completely changed our lives for the better and Pickles is happier as well!

We took Bucky, our 8-month-old male, a loving, undisciplined golden retriever, to Premier Canine for help in getting him under control and responsive to our commands. We are both approaching 80, and the uncontrolled energy of an 8-month-old puppy was beyond our ability to manage, even though we had previously successfully raised two golden puppies over the previous twenty-five years. After 2.5 weeks of "live-in" training, Bucky returned to us his same loving self, but now amazing, with management and discipline. Even better, we, too, were trained by Sarah and Rachel to maintain the discipline and commands Bucky had learned. Thanks to this exceptional training, Bucky went from being a dog we were unsure we could be successful with to being a model citizen with us and our cat. We learned many essential tools to continue Bucky's development and our ability to have a dog who now receives compliments for his manners and control. We can't thank Sarah and Rachel at Premier Canine enough for this contribution to our quality of life and Bucky's behavior.

Where We Train

We offer expert dog training and boarding services throughout the Puget Sound and Greater Seattle region. Our service areas include Tacoma, Seattle, Gig Harbor, Bremerton, Port Orchard, Shelton, the Kitsap Peninsula, Federal Way, Olympia, Puyallup, Lakewood, South King County, Pierce County, and surrounding locations.

F.A.Q.s

Do you work with dogs that have a bite history or display human aggression?

Yes, in some cases. Dogs with a bite history or human aggression may be considered following a consultation and behavioral evaluation. Because these cases require specialized handling and a more individualized training plan, availability may be limited and the recommended program may be longer than our standard camps.

Every dog is evaluated individually so we can determine the safest and most appropriate training approach. Program length, scheduling, and trainer availability will be discussed during your consultation.

Why should I invest in your board and train program?

Our Board and Train program offers a comprehensive, results-driven approach to dog training. By immersing your dog in a structured environment with personalized, one-on-one attention from experienced trainers, we address behavioral challenges, teach essential skills, and build a strong foundation for long-term success.

This program saves you time and ensures consistency in training, which is crucial for lasting results. Plus, we provide follow-up support to help you maintain your dog’s progress at home. It’s not just an investment in training—it’s an investment in a happier, more harmonious life with your dog.

How often will I get updates?

We provide regular updates through our social media channels (Instagram and Facebook) so you can follow your dog’s progress. Clients without social media will receive updates via text or email. If you have any concerns, feel free to reach out at any time.

Are e-collars ethical?

When used correctly, e-collars are a valuable tool for communication, not punishment. We teach dogs to understand the e-collar as an extension of the leash, enabling clear and gentle communication both on and off the leash.

E-collars allow you to guide your dog in any setting—at home, on walks, or off-leash in the field—with precision and minimal pressure. They are safe, humane, and effective when paired with proper training techniques.

What training methods do you use?

We take a balanced approach to training, combining structure, clear expectations, and positive reinforcement. While we use treats and praise to reward desired behaviors, we also incorporate corrections and pressure when necessary. Our goal is to teach dogs through all four quadrants of learning: positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, and negative punishment.

This comprehensive approach ensures fairness, clarity, and long-term success for both you and your dog.

Can I visit my dog during training?

While we understand the desire to visit your dog, doing so can disrupt their training. Dogs are here because of associations formed in their home environment, and we work to reset those associations for better outcomes. Reintroducing owners prematurely can confuse the dog and set back progress.

Rest assured, the bond between you and your dog will grow stronger after training as we help transfer their new skills and mindset back to your home.

What if I have another dog at home that isn’t trained?

No problem! Our training doesn’t just focus on your dog’s time with us—we also provide you with the tools and knowledge to create a balanced environment at home. During the program, we’ll give clear guidance on how to manage interactions between your trained and untrained dogs, ensuring consistency and harmony. If needed, we can also recommend training options for your other dog to help the whole household thrive. For households with dogs actively fighting, we recommend seeking specialized training.

I don’t want to send my dog away.

We completely understand—it can be hard to be apart from your furry friend. Our Board and Train program is designed to provide focused, professional training in a structured environment, ensuring your dog makes real progress in a short amount of time. Throughout the program, we keep you updated on their progress, and when your dog returns home, we’ll guide you on how to maintain their new skills. It’s a temporary separation for long-term benefits, leading to a happier, more balanced relationship with your dog.

What if I don’t have the equipment I need?

We provide all the necessary equipment for training, including collars, leashes, and e-collars. You’ll leave fully equipped to continue your dog’s progress at home.

What is your facility like?

Our facilities are in our homes, ensuring your dog is never left unattended. I live on 3 acres of countryside outside Seattle, WA, with large fenced fields for safe play and recall practice. There are dedicated spaces for sniffing, playing, and relaxing when your dog isn’t in training.
